| Acid-Free |
Refers to paper and other items that do not contain acids. Acids can cause paper to discolor, become inflexible, and eventually turn brittle over time. Acid can also destroy photographs or various other elements if it comes in contact with them. |
| Acrylic Paint |
Type of paint used especially by artists, sometimes used with rubber stamps, sometimes applied directly to scrapbook pages or embellishments. |
| Adhesive |
A substance used to bond two materials together; common adhesives used in scrapbooking include glue sticks, adhesive dots and tape rollers. |
| Altered / Altering |
Using scrapbooking supplies and techniques to decorate or embellish objects, such as books, clipboards, metal tins, etc. |
| Basic Templates |
Stencils in basic shapes, such as circles, ovals, and rectangles. |
| Bone Folder |
A flat piece of bone or plastic used for smoothing, scoring, creasing, and folding pieces of paper. |
| Borders |
The outer edges of a scrapbook page that have been decorated. |
| Brads |
A scrapbooking embellishment, usually metal, with two metal bendable prongs on the back. Brads are usually pushed through paper or other thin materials and used to hold items in place. |
| Brayer |
A small hand roller, usually used to spread inks onto rubber stamps. |
| Card-Making |
Creating greeting cards by hand using scrapbooking tools and techniques.

| Cardstock |
A scrapbooking staple! Cardstock is thick, sturdy paper available in a wide variety of colours. |
| Chalking |
Applying chalks or pastels to paper, usually using cotton balls, cotton swabs, or make-up applicators. Chalks are used to shade or highlight areas of paper, and chalking is commonly used in conjuction with paper-tearing or embossing. |
| Cutter |
A paper trimmer. Cutters are available in circles, ovals, straight lines, or other shapes. |
| Circle Journal |
An album that is worked on by a group of people. Each person completes a page before passing it on to the next. |
| Colour Blocking |
Using blocks of colours most commonly cut into squares and arranged to create a page layout or background.

| Corner Rounder |
A very handy scrapbooking tool, a Corner Rounder is a punch used to round off the corners of paper, photos, etc. |
| Crop |
1. To cut or trim off the unwanted portions of a photo, and
2. A social event where scrapbookers get together to work on their scrapbooking projects.

| Decoupage |
The technique of decorating a surface with cutouts of paper. |
| Die-Cuts |
A shape or letter cut from a piece of paper with the use of a special die-cutting machine. |
| Dry Brushing |
The technique of applying paints or sometimes chalks to a surface with a dry applicator and then removing most of it by dabbing with a rag before applying it. |
| Embellishment |
Any item used to decorate your scrapbooking layouts - common embellishments include fibers, brads, eyelets, stickers, charms, and more. |
| Embossing |
Creating a raised design on paper. Embossing is usually done by heating embossing powder that has been laid over a stamped image. |
| Eyelet |
A metal ring used as embellishments or to hold materials in place. |
| Fibers |
Fancy threads used to embellish scrapbooking pages. |
| Foam Stamps |
Like rubber stamps, but made of foam, they are usually used with acrylic paints or inks. |
| Gift Album |
A scrapbook created with a specific person or event in mind and given to someone as a gift. |
| Heritage Pages |
Scrapbooking pages and layouts pertaining to a family's legacy or previous generations. |
| Inking |
The technique of using inkpads to smear, age, stain, or smudge scrapbook pages. |
| Journaling |
What most scrapbookers consider the hardest part of scrapbooking! Journaling is the written part of your page, from long stories to quotes to short captions. |
| Layout |
Another word for "scrapbook page". Layout also means the arrangement of papers, photos, and embellishments on your page. |
| Lignen-Free |
Lignen is a component of the cell walls in plants, and can be found in papers and cause degradation, like acid. Lignen-free papers are used in scrapbooking to preserve the quality of your scrapbooks for future generations. |
| Matting |
The process of framing a photo with a piece of paper, or placing paper behind a photo to provide contrast between the photo and your page's background. |
| Metal Embossing |
The process of creating a raised design in the surface of metal by hammering out or pressing thin metal from the reverse side. |
| Mini-Album |
Mini-albums are small, usually handmade albums, and are usually dedicated to a certain theme or event. |
| Mulberry Paper |
Paper made from the mulberry tree, it is available in many textures and weights. |
| Page Protectors |
Plastic sheets that are used to protect scrapbook pages. |
| Paper Piecing |
The technique of using cut-out shapes in arrangements to create a picture. |
| Paper Tearing |
The technique of tearing paper, rather than cutting it, to produce a textured edge.

A term used to indicate that a product is safe for use with photos, in regards to preservation. |
| Pockets |
Pockets are used on scrapbook pages to hold photos, tags, and other memoribilia, and they can be made from paper, vellum, cardstock, and other materials. |
| Post-Bound Albums |
Albums that are held together with metal posts that run through the pages. |
| Punch |
A tool used to create small shapes from pieces of paper. The term can also apply to the shapes created by the tools. |
| Quilling |
A technique where you roll strips of paper into various shapes. |
| Rubber Stamping |
Rubber stamps are used in conjuction with ink or acrylic paints to transfer shapes onto paper.

| Rub-Ons |
Art work, words, and other designs that are transferred onto paper, metal, wood, and other materials by rubbing over them, usually with a wooden stick. |
| Sanding |
A technique for distressing, aging and roughing up the surface or edges of paper, stickers, photos, etc. Sanding tools include sandpaper, foam sanding blocks, and emery boards. |
| Scraplifting |
A term that refers to copying another scrapbooker's layout. |
| Scrapper's Block |
When a scrapbooker has creative block and has trouble coming up with layout ideas. |
| Shabby Chic |
A style of scrapbooking that includes sanding, crumpling, and distressing paper to give an old and worn look to your page. |
| Spiral-Bound Albums |
Albums that are secured with a metal or plastic spiral binding running up the side of the album. |
| Sponging |
The technique of tranferring ink or paint onto a paper using a sponge in place of a brush. |
| Strap-Hinge Albums |
Albums secured with plastic straps that run through a holder directly on the pages and keep the book in place. |
| Stylus |
A wood, plastic, or metal stick with blunt, rounded ends used to emboss paper. |
| Swap |
Scrapbookers trading different supplies or finished projects with one another in an organized way. |
| Tape Roller |
A rolling device used to transfer double sided tape onto the backs of photos or papers. |
| Template |
A stencil used to trace shapes onto photographs or papers. |
| Vellum |
A light-weight, translucent paper. |
| Xyron Machine |
A scrapbooking tool used to turn small objects into stickers by applying an adhesive layer to them. |
